Japanese Art

I leave for Japan in only 4 days on June 19th!  This week I have been at school for our summer school program and students are learning about Japanese art and culture.  We explored two main areas of Japanese art - Kirigami and Origami.  They are somewhat related, but Kirigami involves not just folding, but cutting as well.  In Japanese, Kiru means to cut, Ori means to fold and kami refers to paper.

For resources on both Kirigami and Origami click on the links here and here.

Students completed a friendship tree from the Kirigami and Origami art they created for the students of Japan

  2. My favorite part of the tree was learning how to create kirigami. I liked learning this because, to me, there were so many cool choices and variations on certain designs.

  6. Kirigami was pretty fun it is way easier than origami i enjoyed it i also made fried chicken with the art of kirigami. It was pretty cool because you can pretty much make anything you want to, and they will give you the directions for anything you want to make. Their are also different levels of difficulty i like a challenge it becaomes fun when it is difficult, its not very fun when you just fold a few times and then your done. by the way using kirigami art to make fried chicken is pretty hard, but I liked it it was a challenge. Even though it wouldnt sound very hard it is. You should try it, it is really fun. I will miss you a lot Sue you are one of the best teachers i have ever had thank you for all the support!!!

    Sincerly,
Emily H. A amazing student from Howard S. Gray
